Internet/Web Browser

Already installed with Linux Mint, on other Ubuntu/Debian based distros it can be reinstalled with the software manager or in the terminal with the command “sudo apt-get install firefox”

We strongly recommend against the use of Google Chrome.  Chrome tracks all your activity and reports it back to Google.  In this age of privacy concerns that is not a particularly good thing.

E-Mail Client

Thunderbird

Already installed with Linux Mint, on other Ubuntu/Debian based distros it can be reinstalled with the software manager or in the terminal “sudo apt-get install thunderbird”

Thunderbird can be used with all e-mail platforms which support either IMAP and/or POP mail retrieval.

To address privacy concerns we strongly recommend that you do not use Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Outlook.com or similar mass services.

We can help you establish hosting (e-mail, web, FTP, etc.) of your own domain.  Added benefit: your e-mail address itself will promote you or your own company and not a huge, faceless corporation.

If for some reason you do not want to self-host or have us host your data, we can alternatively recommend a variety of secure e-mail services which will not harvest your data.  These services typically allow the use of your own domain name.

VOIP

No current recommendations, but you might want to take a look at Ekiga and let us know what you think.  Skype is a Microsoft product and is known to increase users surveillance risk from a number of sources.
