Cases for Mini-ITX Systems

These are organized by likely use-case. Each case can, of course, be used in other categories depending on your desired configuration.

Unless otherwise noted, each of these cases also require a power supply.

Workstation Cases

These cases are appropriate for building high-end workstations. These selections emphasize smallness while still enabling high computing power.

If you have very high storage needs (e.g. thousands of hours of 4k video or HD audio) the bulk of your data storage will likely be in another case (such as a NAS or File Server Case further down this page).

Thermaltake Suppressor F1 Mini-ITX Cube
Thermaltake_Suppressor_F1

The Thermaltake Suppressor F1 Mini-ITX cube style case will accomodate up to 4 hard drives (2, 3.5" + 2, 2.5"). The case offers excellent cooling.

This case can also support GPUs up to 10 inches long.

Cooler Master Elite 110 Mini-ITX
Cooler Master Elite 110

The Cooler Master Elite 110 is a Mini-ITX "squashed" cube style case. The case has excellent cooling options including the possibility of mounting a 120mm water cooling system.

It will accommodate a GPU card up to 8.3 inches and up to 3, 3.5" and 4, 2.5" drives, making this a workstation or gaming case with enough storage options to possibly forego a NAS or File Server.

Media-Center and Gaming Cases

These cases are appropriate for building "media centers" or gaming computers. These selections emphasize smallness while enabling maintenance of computing power. The bulk of your data storage will likely be in another case (such as a NAS or File Server).

Fractal Design FD-MCA-NODE-202 Mini-ITX
Fractal_Design_Node202

The Fractal Design FD-MCA-NODE-202 is considered one of the most elegant (and small) Mini-ITX cases. It can be used horizontally or vertically with the included stand.

This version includes the required SFX power supply. It will accommodate a full size GPU card up to 12.2 inches long. Full size GPUs are often not possible in other Mini-ITX cases.

SilverStone Technology Milo Z Mini-ITX
SilverStone_Milo_Z

The SilverStone Technology Milo Z Mini-ITX case is an awesome home for your media center PC. This case includes a slot for an optical disc drive (often useful in a media center).

It can be used horizontally or vertically with the included stand. It will accommodate a full size GPU card up to 13 inches long and requires an SFX power supply.

Server Cases

These cases are appropriate for building servers. They have lots of room for hard-disk storage.

SilverStone Technology Premium Mini-ITX NAS Case
SilverStone_NAS_Case

The SilverStone Technology Premium Mini-ITX NAS Case will accomodate up to 8 full size hard drives. As such, it is one of the highest capacity Mini-ITX cases.

If using 10TB drives, this case could store up to 80 Terrabytes of data.

This case can also support GPUs up to 11 inches long.

Fractal Design Node 304 Mini-ITX
Fractal_Design_Node304

The Fractal Design NODE-304 is a semi cube-style Mini-ITX case which can accomodate up to 6 full size hard disks. The case is also known for its particularly excellent cooling options. This can substantially lengthen hard drive life and better preserve other system components as well.

If you "sacrifice" two of the hard disk spaces the case will accommodate a full size GPU card, making this a workstation or gaming case with enough storage options to possibly forego a NAS or File Server.

Mini-ITX Case Modifications

Cooling

Air Cooling

Sometimes a case is so small a specialized low-profile cooler is required.

Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 low-profile quiet cooler

The Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 low-profile quiet cooler for AMD Ryzen CPUs is great if you need to eke out about 17 additional milimeters vertical space (vs the height of the stock AMD "Wraith Spire" cooler.

Water Cooling

For maximum cooling power with the quietest profile, water cooling may be the preferred option.

Recommendations coming soon.

Additional Ports

Sometimes we will suggest a case which does not have front ports. Here's a way to bring audio and 2 USB 3.0 ports to the front if you have a 3.5" external drive bay available or some (extensive?) case-modding skills
